SEA Pre K Members Meet with District on Workload and Special Ed
With the passage of a city levy on Pre Kindergarten and its renewal as part of the Families and Kids Levy (city) in November, Pre K classrooms continue to be an important and growing part of Seattle Public Schools.
With that growth comes concerns about how we can best meet student needs and manage workloads. On Thursday we launched a joint committee with SPS to work together to ensure the Pre K program succeeds. SEA members include Kara Golgert (teacher, Sacjawea, Dev PK), Andrea Taylor (parapro, Madrona, Dev PK), Lily Tharp (teacher, Gatzert, SPP+), Monica Geer (parapro, BF Day, SPP+), James Alyson (Specialist), and Kelly Holton (teacher, Green Lake, PCIS) and Dylan Bosseau (teacher, Van Asselt, SPP+).
Nearly 40 Pre K educators met back in February at our SEA office to identify issues, interests, and options. Committee members began presenting many those ideas, focusing primarily on staffing and special education, and also engaged with SPS administrators, including Cashel Toner, Trish Campbell and Sheryl Anderson Moore on how the District sees the opportunities and challenges in pre K.
Our next meeting is April 18th. SEA begins bargaining a new contract in May; we expect that our work in the pre K committee will likely lead to proposals being brought to the main bargaining.
