In the next 10 years, more than 1.8 million of the 3.2 million teachers in this country will become eligible for retirement.
46% of teachers in public schools leave the profession within five years.
Only 4.7% of college juniors would consider teaching at the current starting salary 62% of teachers have second jobs outside of classroom How does society value the teaching profession, how much is a teacher worth, what does this mean for our state and what can be done? Come join Seattle teachers and community members in a free showing of American Teacher on the evening of March 7th at Garfield High School. This documentary is directed by Vanessa Roth, narrated by Matt Damon and based on a book by Ninive Calegari and Dave Eggers. It features four teachers as they reach different milestones in their careers and ask themselves: Can I afford to continue to teach?
Doors open at 6pm for informal dialogue with others from around the district about the public perception of the profession and the importance of recruitment, retention and compensation. The film will begin at 6:30pm and run until 8pm. Following the film, we invite teachers and community members to stay to continue the conversation in discussion groups.
